Federal — the PSOB program
Administered by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, PSOB pays a one-time tax-free death benefit to survivors of public safety officers who die as the direct and proximate result of a line-of-duty injury. It also includes the Public Safety Officers' Educational Assistance program, which helps pay tuition for a spouse and children, and a disability benefit for officers catastrophically injured on duty. The amount is set by federal law and indexed to inflation.
